James R Ford | Artist

James Robert Ford is a British artist whose practice is concerned with childhood past-times, pursuits and obsessions. His body of work consists of projects and investigations based around observations, process and play: ranging from a formula predicting Bond film plot structure, to tracking the lives of cigarette lighters, to covering a Ford Capri in over 4,000 toy cars.

Paper Planes

For this work Ford was focused on the playground activity of making paper aeroplanes. Many different designs (of varying difficulty) were folded, flown and documented in the process. The drawings are studies of these planes handmade by Ford - the subtle depiction of warped edges and uneven folds conveys their pathos and imperfection.

The Bond Formula update

Now that the 21st instalment of the Bond series has been released on DVD, and I have had chance to time it, here are The Bond Formula results (the first release of Casino Royale in 1967 wasn't included in the project because it isn't an official MGM Bond film). They changed the format more than usual in Casino Royale 2006 - there is no Money Penny or Q/R characters and there is no actual final combat between Bond and the main villain - it's Bond being tortured and then some guy comes in and shoots the villain. Still counts though! There were a number of casino gambling scenes so I chose the first one as the one to count. This was also the longest Bond film ever.

33 things to do before you're 10

I came across an article published in a newspaper which listed 33 things you should do before you're 10 and realised I hadn't done them all. Did I miss out on some important activities as a child?! Marriage is a big step toward leading an adult life and because I'm getting hitched in May 2008 I thought I better complete this list ASAP, in-case missing off some of these things makes me mentally unstable further down the line.

Bogey Ball will be shown as part of the Extreme Crafts exhibition at Lithuania's Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius this month. The show runs from 25th May - 12th August. "The exhibition has several sections, from a "rogue's gallery" showing objects and documentation of work being made by self-organised groups and individuals across the globe, to politicised handmade objects. Subverted ideas of national identity as expressed through regional crafts, sitting side-by-side mutated folk traditions and much more."

Objects in Waiting

Ford will be showing a work in the Objects in Waiting exhibition, 19-26 Oct, Sheffield. Objects in Waiting is an exhibition of objects that were found or bought with the particular thought or intention to one day use in the making of an artwork. However, days or months or even years have passed, and still no use for these objects has been found. Perhaps the objects have gained a status whereby they have become too important to combine with anything else. If this is so, consider the possibility that these objects, which have the potential to be elements of an artwork, could in fact be exhibited as works of art themselves...
