Memory Maps
1999 | installation, painting

Using the memory and spatial awareness of school children to recreate a map
of their home town. An installation of their "where I live" pencil
drawings, arranged to fit a projection of an O.S. map of the area,
and separate large paintings of sections of the drawings, removing
the imagery from the context of a map and displaying it autonomously,
questioning the authorship of the work.
This project has the potential
to be replicated in different cities, with larger numbers of participants
(very young or very old, to utilise different cognitive mind sets) to
eventually create a cumulative map of England.
Memory Maps, 1999, 38 children's pencil drawings on paper, Dimensions vary, Winchester and Winnersh version
